On the 7th January 1979, a meeting for all the Maltese rossoneri supporters was held at Palazzo Caraffa on the initiative of the member founder John A. Gauci. Eventually the first general meeting of the club was held at La Vallette Club in Valletta on the official founding date of the Milan Club Malta, the 28th of Jannuray 1979. More th
an 90 members were present at this meeting and a committee was formed after the first statute of the club was approved. The first premises of the club were situated in St. Lucia Street, Valletta and were officially inaugurated by former AC Milan President Giuseppe Farina, the memorable captain Gianni Rivera, as well as former president of AIMC Giuseppe Taccone.
The club started gaining popularity when the first tours, related with AC Milan’s away matches in Sicily, started being organised. This occurred in the early 1980’s and eventually these frequent tours improved the club’s image amongst its members as well as abroad. On May 1989 the club managed to organise three chartered flights, thus giving the opportunity to more than 350 members to watch AC Milan winning the Champions League final at Barcelona against Steua Bucharest. Until today this remains a record, being the club’s greatest tour since its opening.
In the early 1990s the club moved to new and more spacious premises in Hamrun where in 1996 local members had the chance to meet ex-Milan winger Francesco Coco, still in the early beginning of his career. 1991 also remains a memorable year as the Intercontinental Cup was brought to the local club, thus giving the opportunity to hundreds of
members to admire and take photos with the greatest cup of all.
The last player to visit our club was the legendary Daniele Massaro way back in 2004. Together with AC Milan head coach Prof. Mario Bonfanti, Massaro held a conference at the club regarding the Milan Junior Camp 2004, a successful training camp aimed at Milan supporters from the young generation.
Whilst many tours are organised for all members on a yearly basis, the latest feat has been none other than AC Milan’s Champions League final against Liverpool in May 2007. The club had several requests for tickets from its numerous members and thanks to the foreign contacts with Milan, a chartered plane was organised for this special occasion. Many members had the chance to view their team win the UEFA Champions Cup for the 7th time in Athens, when a charter flight was booked and club members had the opportunity to book this tour at the cheapest price in Malta. Needless to say, the tours organised by the club are not only limited to Champions League and Serie A matches. After AC Milan’s success in becoming European Champions for the sixth time in 2003, two of our members went as far as Tokyo to assist at the Intercontinental Cup Final against Boca Juniors...this feat was once again repeated in 2007 when one member had the opportunity to watch AC Milan being crowned FIFA World Club Cup Champions. This goes on to show that the club is not only present at our premises in Malta, or at San Siro, but practically everywhere around the world.
Since its opening Milan Club
Malta, an official member of the Associazione Italiana Milan Clubs, has established itself and boasts to be the Milan club with the largest number of local registered members in the world. During AC Milan’s winter training camp in January 2007, a record number of over 4,500 tickets were sold to the local supporters giving them the chance to view their favourite team play against local champions Birkirkara. The number of tickets sold for this occasion was only second to the organisers themselves and the massive crowd present at Ta’ Qali made this match have the highest recorded attendance at Malta’s national stadium. During this match, Milan Club Malta organised an enclosed section for all AC Milan supporters which went down very well with both local and foreign media, as well as with the players themselves. Thanks to this recent visit as well as its glorious past, the club has managed to extend its popularity with other foreign clubs as well as with AC Milan itself.
During the years there were several chances to meet up with various foreign clubs, MC Latina and MC Palermo are just two of those that have been impressed by the high level of organisation from the local s
upporters. Words of praise for this club have been raised not only by foreign clubs but also by AC Milan officials. On a recent visit to Malta in January 2007, AC Milan team manager Silvano Ramaccioni commented about the history of the club and its importance as the largest supporters club in the world. Not only was Mr. Ramaccioni impressed by the high level of organistation at the national stadium in Ta’ Qali, during his official visit at the club he stated that “questo non e solo il Milan Club piu grande del Mondo, questo e il Milan Club piu bello del Mondo… …ho visto tanti club negli ultimi 25 anni e questo e un club in cui si potrebbe ospitare il Presidente, Silvio Berlusconi.” (Not only is this the largest Milan Club in the world, this is the most “beautiful” Milan Club in the world… …I’ve seen many clubs in the past 25 years and this club is one of the few which could host AC Milan President Silvio Berlusconi).
With its current premises in Qormi, the club can certainly live up to its high reputation which has been gained throughout the years. All local supporters are being offered the opportunity to view live action at our premises on three big screens and several tv sets, whilst forming part of the largest AC Milan supporters club in the world.
